Cal Sweeps Grand Finals at San Diego Crew Classic
March 28, 2010
SAN DIEGO - California won every race it competed in on Sunday at the San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay. In the Copley Cup, the top men's collegiate race at the annual Southern California regatta, the Golden Bears' varsity 8+ took first place with a time of 5:49.50 to win the top event. The Golden Bears also took first in the men's collegiate novice, men's collegiate junior varsity, the men's open event and the JV B final.
'This was our first race, and it was a relatively big race,' head coach Mike Teti said. 'We had Brown and Stanford here; we had four teams from the last year's finals here. Our guys performed well, and they did it twice this weekend. I think it shows that we're on the right track.'
Brown finished second to the Bears in the Copley Cup at 5:53.63 and Syracuse took third at 5:56.22. Pac-10 foe Stanford came in last in the six-boat race (6:03.85). The Cal varsity boat consisted of Olivier Siegelaar, Spencer Crowley, Calum Wright, Chris Yeager, James Long-Lerno, Will Dean, Nareg Guregian, Sean Engel and the coxswain Zachary Vlahos.
The Bears' junior varsity won the Sharp Cabrillo Cup with a time of 6:01.60. Brown also took second in this race with a time of 6:05.67.
'Brown is a really good and they're very deep, so this was a good early test for us,' Teti said.
Cal's open 8+ won the Joan Ward Memorial Trophy, crossing the finish line at 6:19.90. Coming in second place in that race was the 2007 Cal alumni boat.
Cal's novice 8+ raced to a time of 6:13.70 to win the Derek Guelker Memorial Cup, defeating Stanford, which took second place with a time of 6:17.67.
The Cal B JV boat was also victorious in the men's collegiate JV petite race with a time of 6:17.80.
'Our fifth boat just missed making the final yesterday, but they still won the B final today, so it was nice to see all of our boats win at least one race,' Teti said.
Teti also praised his assistant coaches and the rest of his staff for their efforts this weekend.
'I think all of the coaches did a great job this weekend, Wyatt Allen, Luke Agnini and Mike Vallarelli, and our boatman Mike Fennelly,' Teti said.' I tip my hat off to our whole staff for their work this weekend.'
The Bears take the next two weeks off as they prepare for the Stanford Invitational from April 17-18 at Redwood Shores.
