Softball Sweeps Final Weekend Doubleheader over Portland State

Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State softball team (19-14) swept the Portland State Vikings (10-21) in the final weekend doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex.

 

Despite a short rain delay between games, the Beavers managed to earn a 4-0 victory and a 9-0 win in six innings. Sophomore pitcher Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.) held the Vikings scoreless, throwing all 13.0 innings for Oregon State, striking out 14 and scattering five hits.

Portland State 0, Oregon State 4

 

Senior Dani Chisholm (Boring, Ore.) boosted the Oregon State softball team (18-14) to a 4-0 shutout of the Portland State Vikings (10-20) in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader at the OSU Softball Complex with her two-RBI single in the bottom of the second.

 

Chisholm put two on the board for the Beavers with her one-out two-RBI single through the right side, scoring freshman Ally Kutz (Mt. Vernon, Wash.), who walked, and senior Tarah Black (Portland, Ore.), who singled through the right side. Freshman Lea Cavestany (Pittsburg, Calif.) put another run on the board with her 22nd RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Beavers the 3-0 edge after two full.

 

Kutz batted another run in the bottom of the fifth, finding a gap through the right side to score freshman Kilee Lippincott (Lake Chelan, Wash.) from third, who pinch ran for sophomore Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.), who opened the inning with a walk, giving Oregon State the 4-0 lead that would hold.

 

Hall earned the complete game shutout, scattering three hits and fanning eight. She improves to 12-12 on the season. Portland State’s Anna Bertrand was charged with the loss after throwing 5.0 innings, giving up all four runs earned with her record now 7-7.

Freshman Lea Cavestany’s (Pittsburg, Calif.) two home runs in the second game of the doubleheader against Portland State (10-21) boosted the Beavers (19-14) over the Vikings, 9-0 in six innings.

 

Cavestany led off the game for the Beavers with her fourth career home run, sending one deep over right field to give Oregon State the early 1-0 lead through one full.

 

Sophomore Mary Claire Brenner (Portland, Ore.) started the big six run second inning for the Beavers with a leadoff triple to right field. Three batters later, freshman Maggie Doremus (San Diego, Calif.) drove her in with a single up the middle before senior Dani Chisholm (Boring, Ore.) scored Doremus on the 11th pitch seen in the form of a triple to right center. Cavestany walked before an error on second baseman Becca Diede put runners on the corners and scored Chisholm. But sophomore Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.) cleared the bases in her next at bat on a bomb over left field that was lifted over the scoreboard to score three more, giving Oregon State the 7-0 advantage after two.

 

Needing one more run to put the mercy rule into effect, Cavestany hit her second home run of the game, crushing one over right field, scoring Chisholm, who led off the inning with a single, and giving Oregon State the final 9-0 score.

 

Hall chalked up her second win of the day to improve to 13-12 after throwing her second complete game shutout of the day, scattering two hits and striking out six. Portland State’s Nichole Latham was charged with the loss after throwing 1.2 innings, giving up the first seven runs with only three earned.
