French Finishes Fifth at Anteater Invite, Beavers Eighth

March 30, 2010

DOVE CANYON, Calif. - Sophomore Whitney French earned a top five finish for the first time in her college career at the Anteater Invitational Tuesday afternoon. Backed by solid rounds from seniors Brittany Stewart and Lauren Archer, the Beavers finished tied for eighth.

French used a 4-over 75 to wrap up fifth place with a career-best final score of (72-75-75) 222. The Beavers, as a team, shaved 13 strokes off of Monday's second round to shoot 308.

The Anteater Invitational was a two-day tournament, 54-hole tournament. Two 18-hole rounds were played on Monday with the final round played Tuesday morning at the Dove Canyon Country Club, a par-71, 5,960 yard course.

'Whitney played well again and had a very consistent round,' head coach Ris¸ Lakowske said. 'She ran into a couple problems but always bounced back well. She did a really nice job.'

Seniors Brittany Stewart and Lauren Archer raised their games on Tuesday after matching second round scores of 83 on Monday. Stewart shot a final round 4-over 75 to finish the tournament with a (78-83-75) 236 while Archer tallied a 5-over 76 Tuesday to finish at (79-83-76) 238.

'This was a difficult golf course and the scores weren't very low. The greens were extremely fast both days but our team battled that and I'm happy with how they handled it. Brittany (Stewart) and Lauren (Archer) both played better today which really helped us move up.'

Oregon State has nearly three weeks away from competition while it prepares for the Pac-10 Championships, April 19-21. The conference tournament will be hosted by the University of Oregon at the Eugene Country Club.

'We hope to Cara (Freeman) back from her (shoulder) injury in time for Pac-10's and that possibility is looking better than it did just a few weeks ago. We need that fourth score and she could really help us.'
