STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford women's rowing, the defending national champion, gets its spring season underway this weekend at Redwood Shores, hosting the Women's Pac-10 Challenge Saturday and Sunday.

The Cardinal, ranked third in the nation in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Coaches poll, will have its defending NCAA and Pac-10 champion I Eight, NCAA bronze medalist II Eight and Novice Eight open the season against No. 8 Washington at 9:20 a.m. Saturday. This is the first race for both teams. Washington was seventh at the 2009 NCAA Championships and is coming off of Class Day Races last weekend.

The Stanford Varsity Four, which took fifth at last year's NCAA Championships, will open the season against Cal at 10:10 a.m.

'Inviting tough competition to Redwood Shores will always be a priority for Stanford, and opening against Washington will be a great challenge for us,' said Stanford women's head coach Yasmin Farooq. 'We expect them to come out swinging.'

'Our goal is to make the Pac-10 Women's Challenge a destination for teams who want excellent early season competition on the nation's premier dual-racing venue,' Farooq continued. 'We're really honored to have Cal, Iowa, Oregon State, Washington, and Wisconsin here. These cross-region match-ups on an accurate 2,000-meter venue will inspire many to pay close attention to the results. A special thanks to CB Richard Ellis who manages Paragon Point, our regatta and spectator site, the City of Redwood City and to our host hotel, the Hotel Sofitel. Their support makes racing at Redwood Shores possible and we appreciate all they do for us.'

Stanford will continue action Saturday against Iowa in all four boat classes beginning at 3:20 p.m., and will face No. 18 Oregon State in all four boat classes Sunday morning beginning at 9:20 a.m.

Iowa's rowing team last competed at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, TX on March 19. The Hawkeyes competed in the Varsity 4's, Novice 8's and Varsity 8's down a 2000m stretch of Lady Bird Lake. The Hawkeyes raced against Louisville, Central Flordia, Kansas State and Texas.

Iowa won all four races against Lousiville and Kansas State.

Also participating in the Pac-10 Challenge this weekend will be No. 13 Wisconsin.
