Men's Golf Finishes First Day of The Thunderbird Invitational

The second-ranked men's golf team finished the first day of the 38th annual Thunderbird Invitational, hosted at ASU's Karsten Golf Course, in fourth place at 1-under par 567 (291-276).
Senior Knut Borsheim led the way for ASU. The native from Norway shot a 1-under par 142 (67-71) after two-rounds, ending the day tied for 17th place.
The Sun Devils also received strong performances from Jesper Kennegard and Braxton Marquez. Marquez, from Horizon High School in Scottsdale, Arizona shot an even par 142 (72-70) after two-rounds. Kennegard continued his strong performances, as he shot an even par 142 (75-67).
Playing individually, senior Tristan Bierenbroodspot cruised to a 1-under par 142 (69-72), finishing tied for 17th, while classmate Jin Song finished with a 1-over par 142 (71-72). Thomas Buran shot a 5-over par 142 (72-75). Also competing individually was Spencer Fletcher at 5-over par 142 (70-77) and Wes Tucker at 6-over par 142 (70-77).
After the first two rounds of the tournament, the University of Arizona sits in first place at 14-under par 554 (278-276). The top four in the standings are all Pac-10 members.

ASU WINNERS: Fourteen ASU teams have won the Thunderbird Invitational, with ASU winning the title in 1984, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2009.
PAST ASU INDIVIDUAL WINNERS: Eight Sun Devils have won the individual titles on nine occasions, with Phil Mickelson (1991 and 1992) the only multiple winner. Other Sun Devil individual winners include Mark Sollenberger (1974), Jim Carter (1984), Larry Barber (1994), Todd Demsey (1995), Jeff Quinney (2000), Paul Casey (2001) and Alejandro Canizares (2003), Stephan Gross (2009-shared).
