April 2, 2010

LOS ANGELES - The No. 17-ranked California men's tennis team (10-5, 1-1 Pac-10) fell, 5-2, to No. 9 UCLA (12-4, 3-0) in a Pac-10 dual at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Friday, April 2. The Golden Bears earned points with wins at the fourth and sixth singles courts. Sophomore Nick Andrews came back after dropping his first set to earn a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Kallim Stewart at No. 4 singles and freshman Riki McLachlan took a 6-3, 6-2 win over Alex Brigham at court six.

The Bruins seized the first point of the day as they won at the first and third doubles courts. At court three, Matt Brooklyn teamed up with Stewart to take out junior Bozhidar Katsarov and McLachlan, 8-3. UCLA sealed the doubles point as the No. 41-ranked duo of Amit Inbar and Nick Meister upset Cal's No. 26-ranked tandem of juniors Jonathan Dahan and Pedro Zerbini. The No. 23-ranked team of Andrews and freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt earned a win as Haythem Abid and Brigham retired while down, 6-5.

Cal fell behind by two points as No. 89 Meister defeated No. 16 Zerbini in two sets at the top court, 6-1, 6-0. No. 52-ranked Brooklyn put UCLA up by three points with his 6-1, 6-1 win over No. 116 Dahan at court three. However, the Bears did not back down as McLachlan put up his 6-3, 6-2 win over Brigham at court six to get Cal on the board. With the momentum of McLachlan's win, Andrews came from behind to get a 7-5 win in the second and force a third set with Stewart at court four.

At the same time, UCLA forced third sets with second-set wins at courts two and five. The Bruins stepped on the gas and earned their fourth point of the day as Maxime Tabatruong turned Katsarov's comeback bid away to take a 6-4, 6-7, 6-0 win at court five. Katsarov won the second set with a 7-3 score in the tiebreaker. Andrews completed his win for Cal's second point next, but the Bruins added one more point as No. 102 Inbar turned a 7-4 win in the second-set tiebreaker into a 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 win against No. 71 Konigsfeldt at court two.

The Bears will take on fourth-ranked defending NCAA champion USC (17-2, 3-0) at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium on Saturday (April 3) at 1 p.m. PT. Please check CalBears.com for more information.
