No. 21 Huskies Net Big Road Win At No. 34 `Cats

April 2, 2010

TUCSON, Ariz. - The 21st-ranked Husky men's tennis team played one of its best matches of the season today, rolling to a 6-1 road win at 34th-ranked Arizona. The Huskies (16-3, 1-2 Pac-10) took the doubles point and the top five singles matches to pick up their first Pac-10 win of the year.

Washington responded very well from two losses last weekend to the L.A. schools by earning its best road win of the season in emphatic fashion. Last week, every close set seemed to go against UW, but today was a different story, as the Huskies pulled out nearly every close match.

Junior Martin Kildahl clinched the win with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Jason Zafiros at the fourth singles spot. That followed impressive wins from UW's top two singles players. 65th-ranked Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan handled 90th-ranked Andres Arango, 6-4, 4-0 at No. 1 singles with Arango retiring in the second set. Freshman Kyle McMorrow posted a big win over Jay Goldman at the second spot, 6-2, 6-3.

Washington closed out the match with two more big wins. Junior Tobi Obenaus earned his team-leading 21st win, 7-5, 7-5 over Geoff Embry at fifth singles. Lastly, after splitting a pair of 7-5 sets, senior Derek Drabble pulled out an upset of 115th-ranked Andres Carrasco with a 10-6 win in the super-tiebreak. Arizona's lone point came at No. 6, where Ravid Hazi topped junior Alex Rosinski, 6-1, 6-4.

The Huskies started the match off with a doubles victory thanks to their top two teams. Drabble and Kildahl dominated Embry and Hazi, 8-1, at the second spot, then McMorrow and Nedunchezhiyan clinched at No. 1 with an 8-3 victory over Metham and Malo.

Next week UW will make its final regular season road trip, heading to the Bay Area. The Huskies will take on No. 7 Stanford on Friday, April 9, at 1:30 p.m. and then will challenge 17th-ranked California on Saturday, April 10, at 1 p.m.
