Spring Practice -- Day 3 -- Katz to Bishop -- TOUCHDOWN BEAVERS!

April 2, 2010

Corvallis, Ore. -

For the first time in 2010, the Beavers were in pads.  And judging from some of the hits, it has been a long time coming.

'I always worry about (the first day of pads) that, because everybody is so amped up,' head coach Mike Riley said.  'Everybody is so anxious to get the pads on and get some hits in; we managed it pretty well and it was a good practice.'

A big crowd of fans ducked into the Truax Indoor Center Friday, including a few of the players' parents.  Even some kids made it today to get autographs of their favorite players following the drills.

As for the drills, an early prediction that the voice of the Beavers Mike Parker, soon to be an honorary alum of OSU by the way, will be broadcasting to the world - 'Katz to Bishop - Touchdown Beavers.'  Those two already look pretty comfortable with each other, and of course there is always James Rodgers, who did his usual twisting and turning of the defensive backs.

But, it wasn't all offense today, as there were at least five interceptions in team drills, including linebacker Zane Norris picking two.  Katz looked like he was going to make it unscathed in the INT department, but alas Brandon Hardin got him and did his best Sabby Piscitelli imitation down the sideline.

Some discouraging news from today as sophomore starting left tackle Michael Philipp will most likely be sidelined the remainder of spring practice as he is expected to have arthroscopic left knee surgery next week after suffering the injury in practice Wednesday.  Philipp earned Freshman All-America honors last season and started all 13 games after Timi Oshinowo went down with a season-ending knee injury in the spring game last May.  Speaking of Oshinowo, he looks like he is in the best shape of his OSU life and ready to fill the void.  Colin Kelly even had some reps at left tackle Friday.

With Philipp sidelined, the offensive line now has two starters out for spring drills. Left guard Grant Johnson is also watching, as is reserve Rory Ross.  Wide receiver Darrell Catchings also missed his second day with an eye injury.

Did you know? The Beavers will face the two winningest active quarterbacks in the Football Bowl Subdivision (Div. I) this season.  TCU's Andy Dalton has won 29 games as a starter and Boise State's Kellen Moore has 26 wins.
