No. 4 USC Takes 6-1 Win Over No. 17 Men's Tennis

LOS ANGELES - The No. 17-ranked California men's tennis team (10-6, 1-2 Pac-10) fell, 6-1, to No.4-ranked defending NCAA champion USC (18-2, 4-0) on Saturday (April 3) at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium. Sophomore Nick Andrews scored the only point for the Golden Bears as he tallied a 10-7 match-tiebreaker score to upset No. 73-ranked Jaak Poldma at court three. It was Andrews' team-leading 23rd singles victory of the year and his 12th in dual matches.

The Trojans fired the first shot of the day with a win on the second doubles court as Daniel Nguyen and JT Sundling came away with an 8-4 win over junior Bozhidar Katsarov and freshman Riki McLachlan. USC's No. 8-ranked team of Robert Farah and Steve Johnson clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 victory against Cal's No. 23-ranked duo of Andrews and freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt. With the first point awarded, junior Jonathan Dahan and sophomore Sky Lovill came up with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker to win, 7-6, over Peter Lucassen and Poldma at the third court.

Cal fell behind, 2-0, as the nation's top-ranked singles player, Johnson, earned a 6-4, 6-1 win against No. 116 Dahan at court two. No. 83-ranked Nguyen made the score, 3-0, for USC as he defeated Katsarov at the fourth court, 6-3, 6-2. The Trojans clinched their 18th win of the year when No. 123 Sundling turned a 6-4, 6-2 win against Lovill at court six.

With the match decided, No. 71 Konigsfeldt bowed out to No. 15 Farah at the top singles court, 6-3, 6-4. Andrews won his first set, 7-6, with a 7-5 victory in the tiebreaker before Poldma came up with a 6-2 win in the second. In the match tiebreaker, Andrews turned Poldma away, 10-7, to make the score 5-1 for USC. Jason McNaughton posted a sixth point for the Trojans with his win at court five. McNaughton won the first set, 6-2, but surrendered a 6-3 decision to McLachlan in the second. The two stayed close in the tiebreaker but McNaughton prevailed with a 10-7 final score.

The Bears will close the regular-season schedule with three conference dual matches as the home team at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Cal will host Oregon on Friday, April 9, and Washington on Saturday, April 10, next weekend. Please check for more information.
