Post game quotes: WNIT Championship, April 3, 2010
April 3, 2010
Head Coach Joanne Boyle
'Incredibly excited for this group. It's been a long journey. You always talk about the lifetime. This was their lifetime. They took the bull by the horns in post season and said 'we're going to make the most of it.' A lot of teams can just walk away from it. We decided to refocus and show people we can handle post season play. I thought they did an unbelievable job today just finalizing it all.'
On frustrating Miami's offense
'We always come out and play man-to-man just to see what our match-ups are going to look like. Then they went on that little run. We just tried to watch tape on them and see what other teams do. We kind of went into a soft press to take time off the clock. Once they were getting in the half court, Shenise (Johnson) started feeling it a little bit. Riquna (Williams) started going, and then they really like the one-on-one play. We were trading baskets with them then and we weren't keeping that lead going, so we just started soft-pressing a little bit and I thought they started rushing things a little bit. Then they hit a couple of open threes, so we had to get back out of it. Then we went back to it. I think switching that up a little bit, making them think. They didn't run their stuff at that point. So, just changing up the defense on them.'
On Gray-Lawson's ability to make plays at the end of the shot clock
'I think it is all about players making plays. I think that Lex has learned and has done that for us for a number of years. In particular this year, it has gone to another level with end of game clock and shot clock stuff. DeNesha had a couple herself. You just need those kind of players. Big time players make big plays at the end of games and end of shot clocks. And that is just Lex. It is nothing we diagram, believe me.
Freshman forward DeNesha Stallworth
'At the beginning of the game we were talking about how we are bigger than them and how we should be taking advantage of that. And just finish, That was our goal. And we did it.'
Senior guard Alexis Gray-Lawson
'It couldn't have gotten better. I think our season was definitely about being up and down and dealing with adversity. I have dealt with adversity over my five years here. I think this was the hardest year for me playing with new people around me. They embraced me and I embraced them and we've become such a great team by doing so.'
On what was going through her mind when she subbed out for the final time
'I can't believe we really won a championship! I don't think anyone believed we could do it and everyone came out to support us. My best friend came from Poland, so I was super-excited today. It was great to be able to win it for everybody.'
On what she said to her mom coming off the court
'Just thanking her for everything. Sometimes I don't get the opportunity to thank my parents for everything. It was my opportunity. It was more about them than me. It was her moment, so I went over there and told her thank you.'
