Stanford Drops Series Finale To Cal, 6-0

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 9 Stanford softball team was defeated by No. 14 California, 6-0, Saturday, at Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal drop to 27-5 overall and 2-1 in the Pac-10, while the Golden Bears earn their first conference win to improve to 1-2 and 29-8 on the season.
Freshman Teagan Gerhart took the loss for Stanford, dropping to 20-4 on the season. Cal's Valerie Arioto moved to 15-5 with the win.
Stanford gave up two runs in the first inning to the Bears. Cal's lead-off hitter Jamia Reid reached on a throwing error by short stop Jenna Rich. She was brought home as Cal pitcher Valerie Arioto hit a two-run homer over the left field fence.
The Bears added two more runs in both the third and fourth innings. In the top of the third, catcher Lindsey Ziegenhirt hit Cal's second two-run long ball to left field for a 4-0 lead. Then in the fourth, Reid registered a triple to left field that scored the Bears' final two runs.
Stanford made a pitching change in the fifth, moving Rich from shot stop to the circle. Rich threw three innings giving up just two hits and no runs for the Cardinal.
Stanford will return to action, Tuesday, Apr. 6 as it hosts the UC Davis Aggies. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Cardinal will then continue Pac-10 play at Oregon State, Apr. 9-11.
