UCLA Signee Thompson Captures ITF Title in Claremont
April 5, 2010
LOS ANGELES - UCLA men's tennis signee Clay Thompson, who is set to join the Bruins in the fall of 2010, captured the singles title at the USTA Claremont ITF Championships at Claremont-McKenna College on Saturday.
Thompson, the tournament's No. 11 seed, defeated Clarke Spinosa of the USA, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the championship match to earn the first ITF title of his career. His first set loss to Spinosa marked the only set he dropped in six matches during his tite run. It was an excellent week for Thompson, who also reached the doubles final in Claremont with partner Mackenzie McDonald.
Thompson, who attends Crossroads in Santa Monica, is currently participating in this week's USTA International Spring Championships in Carson, Calif. Joining him in the 18s main draw is UCLA's other signee, Daniel Kosakowski of Downey's Warren High School.
Both players are currently listed as two of the top 10 recruits in the nation according to TennisRecruiting.net.
