Guidos Pitches Huskies Past Bulldogs, 5-1
April 7, 2010
SPOKANE, Wash. - Washington's Ben Guidos out-dueled Gonzaga's Andrew Danner as the Husky baseball team pulled away in the late innings and beat the Bulldogs, 5-1, Wednesday afternoon at Patterson Sports Complex.
The Huskies picked up their ninth win in the last 10 games to improve to 16-11 on the season. Washington also won, 3-1, Tuesday night at Gonzaga (11-17).
Guidos (1-4), a junior from Normandy Park, picked up his first victory of the season with a brilliant outing. In his six and two-thirds innings of work, he allowed five hits and no walks while striking out two. He never faced more than four batters in an inning and didn't allow a runner past second base despite allowing three doubles.
Danner (1-1) nearly matched Guidos through seven innings, allowing just one unearned run while striking out nine in that span. He ended up working eight innings, allowing three runs (one earned) in the loss.
Washington took advantage of a Gonzaga error in the second to score the game's first run. With Aaron Russell aboard on a single, Miles Kizer reached on a two-out error to extend the inning. Doug Cherry followed with a single to drive in Russell, giving the Huskies a 1-0 edge.
The Huskies finally added some insurance in the eighth inning. After loading the bases on a single, a walk and an error, Russell, the Huskies' senior left fielder, singled to drive in two runs, increasing the Husky lead to 3-0.
In the ninth, the UW added two more as Caleb Brown's bases-loaded sacrifice fly brought home one and Cherry scored from third on a wild pitch.
The Zags broke up the Huskies' shutout bid in the ninth on an RBI single from Kevin Hawk.
This weekend, the Huskies host Arizona in a three-game, Pac-10 series at Husky Ballpark. All three games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
