Ben An Participates Thursday in First Round of 2010 Masters
April 8, 2010
AUGUSTA, GA - Byeong-Hun 'Ben' An, who has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Cal men's golf team in 2010-11, participated in the first round of the 2010 Masters Golf Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on Thursday. An shot a six-over par 78 and is tied for 86th at the end of the first day of action. Fred Couples leads the event at six-under par after shooting an opening-round 66.
The Korean-born An, currently a senior at Bradenton (Fla.) Preparatory Academy, qualified for this year's event when he became the youngest-ever U.S. Amateur champion last August at 17 years of age. He is only the second Cal men's golfer to play in the Masters since Steve Desimone became the Golden Bears' head coach in 1980. Robert Hamilton, the runner-up in the 2000 U.S. Amateur, played in the 2001 Masters.
An will play with 2009 Masters champion Angel Cabrera (Argentina) and Jim Furyk (United States) for the second consecutive day on Friday. All players within 10 strokes or 44 places of the leader (counting ties) after the first two rounds of action will make the cut and continue play on Saturday and Sunday.
