Hot Dawgs Return Home To Face Arizona
April 8, 2010
THIS WEEK: The Washington baseball team (16-11 overall, 2-1 in the Pac-10) returns to Seattle for a three-game weekend series vs. Arizona (20-8, 2-4 Pac-10). The Huskies head into the series having won nine of their last 10, including 3-1 and 5-1 victories over Gonzaga this past Tuesday and Wednesday in Spokane. Six of those nine wins over the last 10 have come on the road and the lone loss was a 12-inning, 6-5 loss to WSU last Saturday. The UW-UA series gets underway with a Friday night game at 6:00 p.m. Saturday's first pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m. and game time on Sunday is 1:00 p.m. All three games will air live in the Seattle area on KKNW AM-1150 and fans can also watch and listen online on the Dawg Channel at gohuskies.com. Washington will start junior LHP Geoff Brown in Friday's game and sophomore right-hander Andrew Kittredge on Saturday. Sunday's starter has yet to be determined. After the series vs. the Wildcats, the Dawgs hit the road for seven of the next eight with a game at Portland Tuesday and road series at California and Arizona State the next two weekends. COACH MEGGS: Lindsay Meggs was named the Huskies' new head coach in July of 2009, just the third different UW head coach in 34 years. Meggs came to the UW after having spent the last three seasons at Indiana State and the 13 prior to that at Chico State, where he won NCAA Division II national championships in 1997 and 1999. He helped Chico to the D-II College World Series seven times and won the league eight times. At Indiana State, he was named Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 2009 after guiding the Sycamores to a second-place finish, their highest since 1998. Meggs currently boasts a 631-318-4 record over 16-plus seasons as a four-year college head coach. He'd previously served as head coach at Long Beach City College and Oxnard College. Born in San Jose and a graduate of Saratoga (Calif.) High, Meggs played four seasons as the starting third baseman at UCLA. He was drafted by the Brewers in 1983, and then again by the Royals after his senior year in 1984. Meggs is joined by assistant coaches Dave Nakama, Greg Moore and Kevin Ticen.
SERIES HISTORY: Arizona and Washington have faced one another 36 times with the Wildcats boasting 21 wins and the Huskies 15 in the series. Last season in Tucson, on the second-to-last weekend of the season, the Wildcats won two of three. The Huskies won the opener, 7-4, thanks to homers from Kyle Conley, Julien Pollard, and David Bentrott. Arizona won the next two, by scores of 10-7 and 9-5. In 2008 in Seattle, the teams played a low-scoring, pitching-dominated series as the Huskies won two of three. In the opener, played at Safeco Field, Nick Haughian struck out 15 in at two-hit shutout as the UW won, 1-0. The next day, David Coulon returned the favor, pitching Arizona to a 5-0 victory. The UW took the series with a 5-1 Sunday behind a strong outing from Jorden Merry (one run over 7.1 IP).
HUSKIES BACK AT SAFECO FIELD: Washington will return to Safeco Field for the fourth consecutive season this year when the Huskies host Stanford in a 6:30 p.m. game on Saturday, May 1. Earlier that day, at 12:10 p.m., the Mariners play host to the Texas Rangers at Safeco. Fans who show a ticket stub from the M's game can redeem it for a discounted $5 ticket to the Husky game. Last season, the Huskies played two games at Safeco. A crowd of 3,675 saw a 3-1 Oregon State win and there were 4,296 on hand for a 6-4 Arizona State victory later in the year. Three seasons ago, the Huskies beat No. 8 OSU, 6-2, in their first-ever game at Safeco. Attendance was 10,421., at the time a league record for a conference game. In 2008, the Huskies edged Arizona, 1-0, on a two-hit, 15-strikeout shutout by Nick Haughian as 5,187 fans watched on. Tickets are $8 and UW students are admitted free.
