No. 8 UCLA to Host Arizona, No. 21 Arizona State
The No. 8 UCLA women's tennis team (16-3; 3-1 Pac-10) has a pair of conference matches on its plate this week, as the Bruins are scheduled to host both Arizona and Arizona State at the Los Angeles Tennis Center this weekend. Play begins on Friday with UCLA taking on Arizona (12-6; 1-4 Pac-10) at 1:30 p.m. The Bruins, who beat the Wildcats, 4-2 last year in Tucson, lead the all-time series 56-8. Action continues on Saturday with UCLA hosting No. 21 Arizona State (12-3; 4-1 Pac-10) at Noon. The Bruins pulled out a narrow 4-3 win last year in Tempe and lead that series 49-16. The Sun Devils are coming off a 4-3 upset over No. 11 Cal last week. Both of this weekend's matches are free to the public. Fans can also follow the live stats online by clicking HERE.
Rain Disturbs Bay Area Trip
Rain in the Bay Area wreaked havoc on UCLA's plans to pull off a sweep over No. 11 Cal and No. 12 Stanford last week. After the poor weather completely wiped out the Bruins' match with Cal on Friday, UCLA came out flat against Stanford on Saturday, dropping a 5-2 decision to a team that it had beat 6-1 earlier in the year. UCLA and Cal tried to resume their match on Sunday, getting through doubles before the match had to be stopped again due to rain. As of right now there are no plans to resume the match, however it would need to be completed if the result helps determine this year's Pac-10 Champion. Should it come down to that, the match would likely be played in Ojai just prior to the Pac-10 Championships.
UCLA Checks in at No. 8
Following its loss to No. 12 Stanford last weekend, UCLA dropped just one spot from No. 7 to No. 8 in this week's ITA Team Rankings released on Tuesday. Individual rankings, which are released every two weeks, are due out again next Tuesday along with new team rankings. The most up-to-date ITA Rankings can be found by clicking HERE.
Schnack Takes on the Best
Senior Yasmin Schnack takes a 26-11 overall singles record into this week's contests with Arizona and Arizona State. What's even more impressive, however, is that she has achieved that record against some of the best players in the country. Schnack, who is currently ranked No. 5 nationally, has faced 30 ranked singles players in 37 total matches this year, owning a 19-11 mark. Her highest ranked win on the season came over No. 2 Chelsea Gullickson of Georgia at the ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championships during the fall. She also owns top 10 wins over Cal's Jana Juricova, Miami's Laura Vallverdu (twice), and Clemson's Josipa Bek.
UCLA-USC Clash Set for Next Week
UCLA closes out the regular season next Friday at home, hosting No. 17 USC at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at 1:30 p.m. If the previous meeting between the two teams any indication, next week's contest should be a good one. UCLA beat USC, 4-3 at the Marks Tennis Stadium back on March 3. With the two teams tied at 3-3, Bruin junior Andrea Remynse won the deciding match in that contest, defeating Danielle Lao, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 at court No. 3.
