MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -
This is the first blog entry from Stanford gymnasts Alexandra Skoly and Ming Ya Zhou from the NCAA Southeast Regional women's championships. They will provide daily insight from Morgantown, W.Va., as the Cardinal attempts to qualify for its eighth NCAA Championships meet for the eighth time in 10 years.
Hey Stanford Fans!
We woke up before sunrise and departed on our exciting adventure to the state of West Virginia for Regional Championships. For the majority of SWG, this is our first trip to the state! The entire day, the girls from the western part of the country kept asking for a geography lesson. We didn't think it was too confusing but the girls from California frequently mentioned how they felt the 'Northeast is just a jumble of states.' We succeeded in the lesson and hopefully now everyone on the team can say they are able to locate West Virginia on a map!
The past week we have been going to bed and waking up earlier to prepare for the time change. I think many of us can say it made our very early departure a little bit easier. We met at the gym and left for the airport for our first leg of the journey away from sunny California. After a short layover in Las Vegas, we boarded our next flight to continue our way east. The plane ride was longer than many of our previous trips this season, but we passed the time by watching movies, playing games, or listening to music. Allyse, who wasn't accustomed to traveling across the country, was amazed that she could fly back and forth from home three times in the same number of hours. Good thing she lives closer to campus! The funniest moment of the day occurred as we were boarding, and the flight attendant realized we were gymnasts so he told us to 'make sure you tape up, and stay limber!'
We arrived in Pittsburgh and made our way to Benihana's for dinner. We ate some fantastic Japanese cuisine all while enjoying the talented and comical Hibachi-style cooks flip, artistically chop, and throw our food around on the grill in front of us. We also celebrated Lindsey's (our athletic trainer) 'birthday' by singing a Japanese version of Happy Birthday to her ... or at least we tried to keep the beat while the servers sang.
Finally, we watched the hilarious movie '50 First Dates,' laughing most of the time while heading to the hotel. After navigating through the maze of a hotel to find our rooms, we spent the rest of the evening relaxing and getting settled. After a long day spent traveling, we were all very eager to get some rest and prepare for the upcoming weekend. We have a full day ahead of us and can't wait to get out there on the floor!
Thanks for checking in and Go Card!!!
