April 9, 2010

BERKELEY - The No. 15-ranked California men's tennis team (11-6, 2-2 Pac-10) posted its second conference victory with a 7-0 sweep of No. 72 Oregon (12-9, 0-4) at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Friday, April 9. The Golden Bears didn't drop a set in singles after sweeping all three doubles courts to send the Ducks south for the spring.

Cal opened up the day with an 8-4 win at the top doubles court as freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt and junior Pedro Zerbini teamed up for the first time since fall tournaments to take out Alexander Cornelissen and Marcos Verdasco. The Bears collected the first point of the day as sophomores Nick Andrews and Sky Lovill delivered an 8-6 win over Aaron Clissold and Douglas Mayeda at the third court. At court two, juniors Jonathan Dahan and Bozhidar Katsarov went into a tiebreaker with Jose' Izquierdo and Ric Mortera tied at seven games all. After facing a 4-2 deficit, the Bears bounced back to take the match with a 7-5 win in the breaker.

The Bears wasted no time tacking up the second point of the day as Katsarov earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Duncan MacDonald-Korth at No. 5 singles in just under 45 minutes. No. 16-ranked Zerbini fought out a 6-2, 7-5 victory against No. 103 Cornelissen at the top court to give Cal a 3-0 lead in the match. No. 116 Dahan then dashed the Ducks' hopes as he put away Izquierdo at court four, 6-4, 6-2.

With the match decided, McLachlan earned a 6-4, 6-4 win against Clissold at court six to give the Bears a 5-0 lead. After winning his first set, 6-2, No. 71 Konigsfeldt was forced into a tiebreaker with Mortera for the second set but prevailed, 7-5, to give Cal a sixth point from court two. Andrews won his first set, 6-3, against Nico Bjerke at court three, but also faced a tiebreaker for the match. He fought off Bjerke to win, 7-4, in the tiebreaker to complete the sweep for the Bears.

Cal will host No. 22 Washington (16-4, 1-3 Pac-10) in a 1 p.m. PT match at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Saturday, April 10. The Huskies fell, 6-1, to No. 7 Stanford earlier today (April 9) in Palo Alto, Calif. Please check CalBears.com for updates and live streaming video.
