No. 7 Cardinal Outhit No. 22 Huskies In Palo Alto

April 9, 2010

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Husky men's tennis team got off to a slow start today against seventh-ranked Stanford, and despite getting stronger as the match wore on, Washington was unable to turn the tide, falling 6-1 at the Taube Tennis Center. Junior Martin Kildahl continued his strong recent play with a three-set win at fourth singles for the Huskies, who dropped to 16-4 and 1-3 in Pac-10 play.

The Huskies came up just short in doubles play, missing out on a potential big momentum boost that may have led to a tough start in singles. Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Kyle McMorrow hung tight with the No. 1-ranked doubles team in the country, Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher, before the Stanford pair pulled out an 8-6 win. At the No. 2 spot, Derek Drabble and Kildahl were also battling the 31st-ranked pair of Alex Clayton and Richard Wire, yet also came up a few points short, falling in a tiebreaker, eight points to six.

Stanford took quick wins at first and sixth singles to take a 3-0 lead, while the middle four matches were all very tight. At No. 1, fifth-ranked Klahn topped 65th-ranked Nedunchezhiyan, 6-2, 6-1, and at No. 6, Greg Hirshman upended junior Brad Bator, 6-3, 6-0.

At second singles, McMorrow faced 93rd-ranked Thacher, and after falling in the first set, 6-2, McMorrow picked up his game and took the second set into a tiebreak, but Thacher came out on top, 7-4, to clinch the team win. 45th-ranked Clayton fended off Drabble at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-4.

Kildahl picked up his second-straight Pac-10 win, coming back from a set down to beat Denis Lin, 3-6, 7-5, and 13-11 in the third-set super-tiebreak. After missing the fall season with a foot injury, Kildahl has been up and down this dual season but could be rounding into form just as the postseason approaches.

Junior Tobi Obenaus also shook off a rough first set to force a third-set super-tiebreak against Matt Kandath at No. 5 singles, but in this case, Kandath got the win in the abbreviated third set, completing a 6-1, 5-7, (10-8) score.

Washington will play its final road match of the regular season tomorrow against 15th-ranked California, at 1 p.m. in Berkeley.
