No. 8 Stanford Defeats Oregon State, 4-3

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The eighth-ranked Stanford softball team edged Oregon State, 4-3, Friday, in the series opener at the OSU Softball Complex in Corvallis, Ore. The Cardinal improves 29-5 overall and 3-1 in the Pac-10, while the Beavers fall to 20-17 on the season and 1-3 in the conference.
Freshman Teagan Gerhart earned her 21st win of the season in the circle, striking out six batters while giving up five hits and three runs. OSU's Paige Hall took the loss, dropping to 14-14 on the year.
Senior third baseman Shannon Koplitz led the Cardinal offensively, going 3-3 with two RBI and two stolen bases. Freshman Jenna Rich had a double and a RBI for Stanford, while both senior Alissa Haber and sophomore Sarah Hassman each recorded a hit.
Stanford got on the board in the top of the fourth, taking a 2-0 lead over the Beavers. Second baseman Ashley Hansen was hit by OSU pitcher Paige Hall to lead off the inning. After she beat out a throw to second, which allowed Rich to reach on a fielder's choice, Hansen advanced to third on a throwing error by OSU short stop Nikki Chandler. She was brought home as Koplitz registered a single to right field for her 28th RBI of the season. The Cardinal took the 2-0 advantage as sophomore Maya Burns reached on another error by Chandler, scoring Rich.
The Cardinal added two more runs in the fifth inning. Hassman led off with an infield single. She then moved into scoring position after stealing her 14th base of the season. Haber hit a single to center field and then Hansen drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Rich then reached on a fielder's choice that put Haber out at third, but scored Hassman. Then, Koplitz recorded her second RBI of the game, hitting a single to center field to bring home Hansen.
The Beavers avoided the shutout, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, designated player Audrey Roderfeld hit a solo shot to left field for the first OSU run. After right fielder Mary Claire Brenner drew a walk, first baseman Ally Kutz hit a two-run homer to center field to cut the Cardinal lead to 4-3.
Stanford and Oregon State will continue the series, Saturday, at the OSU Softball Complex at Noon PT.
