Trojans Vying For Lead At PING/ASU Invitational
April 9, 2010
Junior Lizette Salas and sophomore Jennifer Song are tied for third while senior Belen Mozo is tied for sixth as the No. 4 USC women's golf team finished in second place after the first round of the PING/ASU Invitational at the Karsten G.C. in Tempe, Ariz.
The Trojans, playing in their final regular-season event, combined for a 7-under 281, two strokes behind first place and host Arizona State (279). Purdue is in third at 287.
Salas and Song each finished with 3-under 69s.
Salas, seeking her fourth top 5 finish in the last five events, posted back-to-back birdies on 4 and 5 but dropped back to even with bogeys on the next two holes. She returned to 2-under with birdies on 13 and 15 and got to 3-under with another on 17. It was her third round in the 60s this season and ninth of her career.
Song, a week after finishing as the low amateur at the LPGA's Kraft Nabisco Championship, continued her strong play in Arizona. She was even through eight holes before birdies on 9 and 10 dropped her to 2-under. She birdied 16 and 17 to get to 4-under before a bogey on 18. Her 69 is her 13th career round in the 60s (the sixth this year), tying Mozo for USC's career record.
Mozo was one stroke off her own 69, but still carded a satisfying 70 on an extremely steady day. She birdied 11 and 17 and carded pars on the remaining holes as she seeks her second straight top 7 finish.
Senior Stefanie Endstrasser, playing in only her second event of the spring semester and the fourth all season, is tied for 30th at 1-over 73. She opened with a birdie on 3 and a bogey on 6 and had a bogey on 14 and a birdie on 15. A bogey on 18 prevented the even round. Still, it was her best effort in competition since a 71 on Nov. 3 at the Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational and her second best round of the season.
Freshman Cyna Rodriguez rounded out USC's fivesome with a 4-over 76, tied for 55th.
Action continues Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 8 a.m.
