Big Plays Dominate Scrimmage

April 10, 2010

TUCSON--Arizona closed spring football with its annual Spring Game in Arizona Stadium on Saturday, playing it pretty straight for a 90-minute session with highlights on both sides.

Head coach Mike Stoops said he was pretty pleased with the effort, highlighted by two big interception returns, another pick and a couple of big offensive pass plays from backup quarterbacks Matt Scott and Bryson Beirne.

Scott had the best outing, completing 16 of 21 passes for 238 yards and a pair of scores including a 54-yard strike to walk-on receiver Mike Descisciolo and a seven-yard fade to Juron Criner.

But one of his throws was picked off by safety Joe Perkins in the endzone after a tip by corner Anthony Wilcox, and Perkins ran it out 25 yards before lateraling to cohort Trevin Wade, who continued down the sideline for a 100-yard defensive score.

Mike Stoops' Quick Take

A dozen plays later, quarterback Nick Foles had a pass picked off by Mike Turner, who scampered 60 yards for a score. And later, near the end of the scrimmage and obviously not with his best stuff, Foles last attempt was picked off by corner Marcus Benjamin. He finished the day with seven completions in 14 tries for 74 yards.

Bryson Beirne completed eight of 12 throws for 89 yards and a 23-yard scoring toss to Criner.

UA coaches held out some guys and stuck to some basic plays in the public display, which drew a sun-washed crowd of more than 6,000. Tailback Nic Grigsby had one run for 22 yards before hobbling with his hamstring issue early, and did not return.

Scott's TD throw to Criner on the fade route was set up by a 73-yard catch and run by running back Taimi Tutogi. The 6-foot-2, 250-pound Tutogi is being used in a variety of roles, all underscored by his punishing physical style. It took two Cats to bring him down short of the goal. He also rushed for 20 yards.

Keola Antonlin rushed 11 times for 43 yards to lead all runners although passing plays were the norm in the game. Freshman Daniel Jenkins chipped in five totes for 11 yards.
