April 10, 2010
LOS ANGELES - Freshman left-hander Justin Jones (Oakdale/Oakdale HS) allowed just one run in eight innings Saturday as the California Golden Bears won their seventh straight game with the 7-1 victory against the USC Trojans at Dedeaux Field. Jones (7-2) scattered nine hits and walked two while striking out 10 batters to remain tied for the Pac-10 Conference lead for wins.
USC (15-16, 2-6) had runners at first and second with two outs in the second and third innings, but Jones recorded strikeouts to end the threat. Sophomore righty Ben Mount (3-2) took the loss after giving up seven runs (four earned) on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings with a walk and three strikeouts.
Cal snapped the scoreless tie in the fifth, scoring three runs with two outs in the inning. Bosco reached on an error by second baseman Adam Landecker. Mitch Delfino then singled to right and Bosco advanced to third when USC right fielder Garret Houts mishandled the ball. With runners at the corners, Marcus Semien hit a two-run double to right center and moved to third on the throw. He later scored on a passed ball charged to catcher Kevin Roundtree for the 3-0 Cal lead.
Tony Renda's sacrifice fly in the sixth made it 4-0 in favor of Cal, plating Danny Oh who reached after being hit by a Mount pitch. Bosco tripled to lead off the top of the seventh and Semian walked to put runners at the corners again. Brian Guinn singled to left to knock out Mount before Canha delivered a two-run double to left center off reliever Ryan Cabral for the 7-0 advantage for Cal.
Landecker doubled down the right field line in the seventh and later scored on Joe De Pinto's RBI fielder's choice for the Trojans' lone run of the game.
The series concludes tomorrow with a 1 p.m. start. The game will be broadcast through a live video webcast on usctrojans.com.
Notes: Matt Foat and Joe De Pinto, who both had two hits in the game today, lead the Trojans with 11 multi-hit games this season.
