April 10, 2010

SEATTLE - The No. 12-ranked California women's tennis team (16-4, 4-1 Pac-10) earned its third consecutive Pac-10 dual victory as the Golden Bears defeated No. 25 Washington (10-6, 2-5), 6-1, at the Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium on Saturday, April 10. Freshman Annie Goransson delivered the clinching point for the second straight match as she defeated Joyce Ardies at No. 5 singles, 7-6, 6-1.

The Bears swept all three doubles courts to claim their 18th doubles point in 20 matches. Cal's No. 73-ranked tandem of junior Marina Cossou and senior Kasia Siwosz got things started as they blanked Venise Chan and Lina Xu at court two, 8-0, for the first win of the day. Freshmen Tayler Davis and Goransson had the point-clinching honors at court three with an 8-3 win against Aleksandra Malovic and Samantha Smith. With the first point secured, the Bears' seventh-ranked team of junior Mari Andersson and sophomore Jana Juricova took out No. 14 Ardies and Denise Dy at the top court, 8-6.

No. 44-ranked Andersson collected Cal's second point as she turned in a 6-3, 6-1 win over Smith at court three. It was Andersson's 10th-consecutive singles victory and her 25th overall. The Huskies got on the board with a win at court six as Malovic pulled off the 6-3, 6-0 win over Davis. After winning her first set, 6-2, Siwosz dropped her second set to Xu, 6-4, at court four. Siwosz returned to form in the final set for a 6-2 win to put the Bears up, 3-1, in the match. Goransson battled out a tough first set with Ardies at court five and was able to hold off her Husky opponent for a 7-2 win in the first set. She then had an easier time in the second as she cruised to a 6-1 win for Cal's fourth and match-clinching point.

No. 3-ranked Juricova extended her winning streak to eight consecutive singles matches as she took out No. 17 Chan in a thrilling three-set match at the top court. Chan claimed the first set, 6-4, but Juricova answered back and surrendered just one game to Chan in the second. Juricova finished off the victory with a 6-4 tally in the third set to make the score, 5-1, Cal. In the last match off the courts, No. 15 Cossou and No. 4 Dy battled it out to a three-set finish that ended, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, for Cossou as she posted her first Pac-10 dual singles win.

The Bears head to Pullman, Wash. to take on Washington State (10-12, 1-5 Pac-10) at the Simmelink Tennis Courts in an 11 a.m. PT match on Sunday, April 11.
