Wildcat Track Continues To Roll

LOS ANGELES - The University of Arizona's No.17 women's and unranked men's track and field teams continued to roll through the 2010 outdoor track and field season this weekend as they head to the City of Angels to take part in the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational to try their skills against some of the top programs in the country.

To date, the Wildcat squads had competed in mostly small scale meets as they prepared for the big ones in the weeks to come, including the Pac-10 Championships just a little over a month away.  Friday and Saturday marked the first 'big' meet of the season for Arizona with over 20 colleges represented and the majority of the UA team in competition to boot.

The UA women rocketed 15 position in the most recent USTCCCA rankings released this week and showed that their positioning was no fluke as they posted several impressive marks on the weekend.

Redshirt freshman Georganne Moline continued to impress in the 400-meter hurdles and the youngster has still yet to lose a race this year as she won the Invite section of the event Saturday in 59.09 - her third personal best in as many weeks.  In doing so, she moved up the UA record books for the third straight competition and now holds the sixth fastest mark in Arizona history despite only running the event so few times.

Another freshman making her marks in the books so far this season is Julie Labonte.  Labonte entered the weekend with the fourth best mark in the country and third best in Arizona history despite her youth in the women's shot put and she would go on to win her section of the event with a mark of 16.23m (53-3).  Fellow freshman Alyssa Hasslen helped complete the UA sweep in the event as she posted a very impressive throw of 15.55m (51-0 1/4) to take second place.

The UA women's 4x400-meter relay team continued to remain consistant as they were the fastest collegiate team Saturday, finishing in 3:38.52.  The squad of Christina Rodgers, Deanna Sullivan, Echos Blevins and Moline established itself as the third fastest quartet at in UA history at last weekend's Jim Click Shootout in Tucson and UA head coach feels that they have what it takes to eventually be atop the list.

Junior LaTisha Holden continues to look for her breakthrough outdoor season and has looked to fit the part early in the season, finishing third Saturday in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.63.  Fellow junior Rodgers also fared well in the invite section of the 800-meters, finishing second in 2:07.13.

Two Wildcats teamed together to sweep the women's high jump event as freshman Brigetta Barrett would finish first while senior Jasmin Day continues to make her return after missing the indoor season and found herself second at the end of the day.

On the men's side, freshman Nick Ross bounced back from a recent surgery to finish second in the Invite section of the high jump with a clearance of 2.14m (7-0 1/4).  teammate and fellow freshman Edgar Rivera-Morales had the same mark but wound up third due to misses.

Korion Morris also won his Invite section in the shot put, for his second win in the event in as many weeks after sitting out the indoor season.

There will be little break for the Wildcats as the season rolls forward with the Mt. Sac Relays on the horizon next weekend for the team - one of the largest meets on the national level any where in the country at any point this year.

Some other youngsters impressed in the open sections on Friday, with one being freshman Elizabeth Apgar who set a personal record in the 1500-meter run to win the section by over a second over her closest competitor.  Redshirt freshman Nico Reaves posted one of the best runs of his young career, winning the open section of the 400-meters in 47.99.
