Cal Gets 4-3 Win To Earn Pac-10 Sweep Over USC
April 11, 2010
LOS ANGELES - Matt Flemer threw 1 2/3 perfect innings in relief Sunday as the California Golden Bears won their eighth straight game in a 4-3 victory against the host USC Trojans to earn the Pac-10 Conference series sweep. Flemer entered the game in the eighth with the tying run at third and one out, getting the Golden Bears out of the jam to pick up his second save of the season.
California (20-10, 6-3) moved into a first-place tie in the Pac-10 with No. 1 Arizona State, who dropped two of three games this weekend at Washington State. USC fell to 15-17 on the season and 2-7 in conference play.
Brian Guinn went 3-for-4 for Cal, including the eventual game-winning RBI single in the sixth while Mark Canha and Tony Renda chipped in with two hits apiece. Canha finished the weekend series with a 7-for-13 performance. Sophomore right-hander Dixon Anderson (3-1) recorded the quality start with seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits.
Canha put the Golden Bears up 1-0 in the first, belting his fifth homer of the season to dead center. Foat singled to lead off the USC half of the second, moving to second on Brandon Garcia's groundout and scoring on Matt Hart's single to center to tie it at 1-1.
Singles by Renda and Jimmy Bosco put runners at the corners with an out in the top of the fourth. Mitch Delfino singled to center, putting Cal ahead by the 2-1 score. Triggs then hit Guinn to load the bases and on a 1-0 count, he hit Danny Oh with another pitch to force in the run to put Cal up by two runs. Marcus Semien doubled down the left field line with two outs in the sixth and scored on Guinn's single to center for the three-run advantage.
Back-to-back walks put the Trojans in business in the eighth. Chris Petrini struck out Ricky Oropesa for the first out, but reliever Brian Diemer surrendered back-to-back RBI singles from Foat and Garcia to put runners at the corners. Flemer entered the game and struck out Hart for the second out. Mike O'Neill then flied out to center to preserve the one-run lead for the Golden Bears with Flemer retired the side in order in the ninth to complete the sweep.
USC will not play until next weekend when the Trojans continue Pac-10 play with a series at Arizona State, Friday-Sunday (April 16-18). Friday and Saturday's game starts at 6:30 p.m. with a 12:30 p.m. start on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live (audio only) on usctrojans.com.
