Dawgs Drop Rubber Game To Arizona, 9-1
April 11, 2010
SEATTLE - The Arizona baseball team used three home runs to beat Washington, 9-1, Sunday at Husky Ballpark, handing the Huskies just their third loss in their last 13 games.
Arizona (22-9 overall, 4-5 in the Pac-10) picked up a series win, two games to one. Washington fell to 17-13 and 3-3 in the conference.
Wildcats starter Kyle Simon (5-2) went the distance to pick up the win, allowing the one run on three hits. He retired the last 10 Huskies he faced to close out the complete game.
Husky freshman Adam Cimber (2-2), making just his second start, suffered the loss. He gave up four runs (three earned) in his four innings of work.
Arizona scored the game's first run in the second. With one out and Bobby Brown aboard on a double, Bobby Rinard hit a groundball to third. On the throw to first, Brown took off for third and, when the throw back to third to try to get him got away, he came in to score.
Washington answered with a run in the bottom of the second to tie it, 1-1. Caleb Brown was hit by a pitch to lead off and, after advancing to third on a single and a groundout, he came in on a Doug Cherry sacrifice fly.
However, in the third, Arizona's Joey Rickard hit a one-out solo home run to left. Rafael Valenzuela then walked and scored all the way from first on a double from Jett Bandy to give the Cats a 3-1 lead. In the fourth, Brown tripled and scored on a Rinard single to make it 4-1.
The Wildcats got back at it again in the fifth. After new UW pitcher Adrian Gomez was greeted with back-to-back singles, Steve Selsky hit his sixth homer of the season to increase the lead to 7-1.
Arizona used the longball to add two more in the seventh as Robert Refsnyder knocked a two-run homer to left, making it 9-1.
Washington plays on the road for its seven of its next eight games. The Huskies travel to Portland on Wednesday (NOTE: this game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but has been changed) for a non-conference game before heading to Berkeley for a three-game series at Cal this coming weekend.
The Huskies return home to face Portland on April 20 before another three-game, Pac-10 road series at Arizona State April 23-25
