Freshman Golfer Johnson Named to 2010 Curtis Cup Team

April 12, 2010

Arizona State freshman Jennifer Johnson has been selected to represent the United States at the 2010 Curtis Cup. Held June 11-13, at the Essex Country Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass., the Curtis Cup selects eight of the top American amateur golfers to compete against the top amateur golfers from Great Britain and Ireland. This will be the 21st time a Sun Devil has been selected as a member of the Curtis Cup and first since Kellee Booth in 1998.

The Curtis Cup Match consists of three foursomes (alternate-shot) and three four-ball (better ball) matches on the first two days. On the final day, all eight players from each side play in singles matches. The U.S. holds a 26-6-3 lead in the tournament.

In her freshman campaign, Johnson has proven to be one of the top collegiate players. She has placed in the top 10 in five out of the seven tournaments and has been ranked in the top 10 by both Golfweek and Golf Stat this season. She showcased her exceptional skills at the U.S. Open last summer, resulting in a runner-up finish. Additionally, Johnson was one of seven amateurs given an exemption to the Kraft Nabisco Championship and one of four to make the two-day cut.

Four of the other members of the United States' Curtis Cup team were in action at the PING/ASU Invitational this past weekend. Kimberly Kim of Denver, Jennifer Song of USC and UCLA's Stephanie Kono and Tiffany Lua all competed at the ASU Karsten Golf Course this past weekend. Rounding out the team is Cyndey Clanton of Auburn and junior players Jessica Korda and Alexis Thompson. Candace Schepperle of Auburn will serve as the first alternate with UCLA's Sydnee Michaels as the second alternate.
