Oregon's Fuiava Named Pac-10 Player of the Week, Washington's Lawrie Named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - OREGON junior Monique Fuiava was named Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week and WASHINGTON senior Danielle Lawrie was named Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for April 5-11, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Fuiava provided the heroics for the Ducks in their 3-0 sweep of California over the weekend, knocking in the her seventh and eighth game-winning RBI’s of the season. In the opener on Friday, the Las Vegas, Nev. native connected on a career-high and team season high four hits, including the game-winning two-run double. In the finale on Sunday she added a two run homer for the game-winning RBI. On the weekend Fuiava hit .500 and paced the squad in hits (6), doubles (1), slugging (.833) and on-base percentage (.500) and ranked second in homers (1-tied).
Lawrie was dominant in the circle against Arizona, shutting down the nation’s highest-scoring offense coming into the series. The Langley, B.C. native threw 21.0 innings, striking out 39 and walking just four. She threw one shutouts and at one point held the Wildcats scoreless for 12 consecutive innings over the three game series. Lawrie struck out at least 12 in every game, including a high of 14 on Friday. On Saturday she held the Wildcats to just two hits, in a 7-0 victory. With her 39 strikeouts on the weekend, Lawrie went over the 1,600 strikeout mark in her career, becoming just the eighth pitcher in NCAA history to do so. With 1,627 in her career, she is now just 13 behind California’s Michelle Granger for seventh in NCAA history and third in Pac-10 history. Overall Lawrie is 23-1 on the season and leads the nation with 13 shutouts to go along with 262 strikeouts and 17 walks.
This is Fuiava’s first career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and Oregon’s 33rd overall. For Lawrie, this marks her 14th career Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honor, tying her with Arizona’s Alicia Hollowell for the most Pitcher of the Week accolades all-time. It is also Washington’s 74th honor overall.
