April 12, 2010
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's cross country and track team has signed Emily Wheeler for the 2010-11 campaign head coach Kelly Sullivan announced Monday.
'All of us on the staff and team were thrilled to hear that Emily chose OSU to be here home away from home,' Sullivan said. ' She is one of the top runners in the state and it is always a major priority for us when recruiting and to keep her in-state and to be a part of this young and talented group we have right now makes this an even more gratifying moment for all of us.
'She comes from one of the premier high school programs in the state and has been coached by Paul Zitzelberger who I truly believe prepares all of his young talented runners to not only compete at the top level in high school,' Sullivan said. 'His track record of his kids going on to run even better at the collegiate level is well documented.'
Wheeler (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) will come to Oregon State as a highly accomplished runner both cross country and track. She recorded 13 cross country first place finishes in the 5,000 during her career at Tualatin HS. She has recorded another 22 track first place individual finishes scattered over multiple events.
During her senior track season she has already recorded two first place finishes in the 1,500 meter and one in the 800 meter events.
'We signed two Emily's for next year, Emily Wheeler and Emily LaValley out of Colorado, two of the best young talents in the country,' Sullivan said 'Big kudos must go to my assistant, Adam Tribble for being the key person in recruiting them both.'
