Cardinal Drops Series Opener At Arizona, 3-2

TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 8 Stanford softball team dropped the series opener at No. 4 Arizona, 3-2, Friday at Hillenbrand Stadium in Tucson, Ariz. With the loss, the Cardinal fall to 4-3 in the Pac-10 and 30-7 overall, while the Wildcats improve to 33-7 on the season and 3-4 in the conference.
Freshman Teagan Gerhart began the game in the circle for the Cardinal, throwing 2.2 innings. She was replaced in the middle of the third by junior Ashley Chinn, who made her first appearance since March 23. The Belmont, Claif., native went 3.1 innings, giving up just one hit while striking out two batters. Gerhart took the loss, dropping to 22-6 on the season.
The `Cats struck first, posting three runs in the bottom of the third inning against Gerhart. Catcher Stacie Chambers hit an RBI double to left center field for the first score before third baseman Brigette Del Ponte hit a two-run shot to right center field for the 3-0 advantage.
The Cardinal avoided the shutout, scoring one run in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore Sarah Hassmen led off with a walk and moved to second as senior Alissa Haber was also walked. Hansen then hit an RBI double to left field, which scored Hassman. Haber rounded the bases as well, but was out at home plate via left fielder Brittany Lastrapes, Del Ponte and Chambers.
Koplitz pulled Stanford within one, leading off the sixth inning with her fourth home run of the season. However, it wasn't enough as Arizona went on to hold the Cardinal scoreless in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.
The Cardinal and Wildcats will play game two of the three-game series on Saturday at Hillenbrand Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
