UCLA Prepares for 64th Western Intercollegiate
April 16, 2010
The fifth-ranked UCLA men's golf team prepares to play in the 64th Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, CA this weekend.
Although the classic course is one of the shortest on the collegiate circuit, it owns a reputation as one of the toughest. Pasatiempo measures just 6,615 yards and plays to a par of 70. Par will be an outstanding score on a narrow course with fast, well-protected, undulating greens.
The 2010 Western Intercollegiate boasts a 12-team field, highlighted by fourth-ranked Oregon and the No.5 Bruins. Last year's medalist, Diego Velasquez of Oregon is ranked second in the country this week and is one of the favorites this year. Third-ranked John Chin of UC Irvine and fourth-ranked Eugene Wong of Oregon are also considered top contenders.
UCLA's top-ranked player is sophomore Alex Shi Yup Kim, who is ranked 38th this week. Kim tied for eighth at the U.S. Intercollegiate last week at Stanford. Freshman Pontus Widegren is ranked 41st nationally, sophomore Gregor Main is ranked 52nd and freshman Pedro Figueiredo is No. 73. Freshman Mario Clemens completes the Bruins lineup.
