Chambers Socks Two HRs in Run-Rule Win
April 17, 2010
TUCSON -- Stacie Chambers' walk-off two-run home run gave Arizona the margin for a six-inning mercy rule victory, 10-2, over No. 8 Stanford Saturday night and left the fourth-ranked Wildcats to a two to zero lead in the Pac-10 weekend series.
A crowd of 2,748 at Hillenbrand Stadium saw freshman Kenzie Fowler two-hit the Cardinal (30-8) and watched the Wildcats (34-7) slug four home runs including two in the final inning.
UA moved into a tie with Stanford and Arizona State for third in the league at 4-4.
Arizona put the first runs on the board in the second. Lini Koria singled up the middle and an out later Kristen Arriola doubled over left fielder Alissa Haber's head to send her to third. Karissa Buchanan lined to third for the second out, but Brittany Lastrapes drew a walk to load the bases. Lauren Schutzler then hit a sinking liner that a sliding Haber couldn't quite handle, for a two-run double.
Stacie Chambers led off the Arizona third with her 11th home run of the season to make it 3-0.
The second long ball, off K'Lee Arredondo's bat, followed singles by Buchanan and Lastrapes in the fourth. It was her fourth homer of the year and made it 6-0, and also chased starter Ashley Chinn (6-2).
Fowler retired 12 batters in a row from the first inning until two outs in the fifth when Jenna Becerra looped a singled into short left-center, the first hit for the Cardinal. But in the sixth, she walked Haber with out one and then Ashley Hansen socked her second home run of the year to the gap in right to make it 6-2.
UA answered, with Lastrapes' 13th home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Schutzler walked, moved to second and third on wild pitches and then scored on a passed ball. Arredondo walked and Chambers' second shot ended the game on the mercy rule.
Fowler stuck out six and walked three in improving to 23-5 on the year.
Arizona has 74 home runs in its 41 games.
The teams meet again tomorrow at Noon in the series finale.
