First-Place No. 3 Arizona State Defeats USC, 5-3
April 17, 2010
TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 3 Arizona State Sun Devils won its second straight Pac-10 Conference game on the weekend with the 5-3 win over the USC Trojans as every member of the starting lineup recorded at least one hit. The Sun Devils improved to 30-3 on the season and remain in first place in the conference, one game ahead of California with an 8-3 mark.
Jordan Swagerty, who started the game at catcher, became a pitcher with two outs in the top of the ninth and got the Trojans' tying run at the plate in pinch-hitter Mike O'Neill to ground out for his second save in as many games. Merrill Kelly (8-0) gave up three runs in seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.
The Sun Devils scored three runs on five singles after only having five hits in Friday's 4-3 victory. Joe De Pinto hit a two-run single in the fifth as the Trojans pulled to within one run. ASU made it 4-2 in the sixth with two outs after Swagerty and Raoul Torrez registered back-to-back doubles.
Kent launched his second homer of the season in the seventh for another one-run deficit. Kevin Roundtree singled and Adam Landecker walked with both runners later advancing on a wild pitch. ASU used its bullpen as Brady Rodgers struck out De Pinto and Jimmy Patterson got Ricky Oropesa to hit a high chopper to second. Deven Marrero made the game-saving catch on the one-hopper and retired Oropesa by a step to maintain the Sun Devils' lead. Mitchell Lambson struck out back-to-back Trojans in the ninth before pinch-hitter Keith Castillo laced a two-out single to left. ASU then made the pitching change as Swagerty closed the door.
The series concludes tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
