No. 12 Women's Tennis Clipped in 5-2 Loss to No. 10 Stanford
April 17, 2010
STANFORD, Calif. - The 12th-ranked California women's tennis team (18-5, 5-2 Pac-10) was defeated, 5-2, by No. 10 Stanford (19-1, 7-0) at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium on Saturday, April 17. The Golden Bears took wins at the top two singles courts and at the top doubles court but had their five-match winning streak halted as the Cardinal posted its NCAA-record 161st-consecutive home victory and clinched at least a share of the Pac-10 title.
The Cardinal came out of the gates quickly and snared the doubles point with wins at courts two and three. Veronica Li and Carolyn McVeigh finished first at No. 3 doubles with an 8-2 win over Cal's freshman tandem of Tayler Davis and Annie Goransson. Stanford claimed the first point of the day as Mallory Burdette and Stacey Tan completed an 8-4 win against the No. 83-ranked duo of junior Marina Cossou and senior Kasia Siwosz. Even so, the Bears reclaimed a little momentum heading into singles matches as the No. 7-ranked team of junior Mari Andersson and sophomore Jana Juricova upset the second-ranked team of Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette, 8-6, at the top court.
The Bears ran with that momentum as No. 2 Juricova knotted the team score at one-all with a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 4 Barte at the top court. Juricova avenged a loss to Barte by the same score from March 6 to earn her 11th-straight singles victory dating back to March 17. Cal went ahead, 2-1, on No. 17 Cossou's win at court two. Cossou collected her 25th singles win as she defeated No. 69 Mallory Burdette, 6-3, 6-2. The Cardinal evened things up at two-all as No. 73 Tan turned a squeaker of a first-set into a 6-0 win over Siwosz in the second at court four. Tan pulled out a 7-2 win in the first-set tiebreaker and was able to break serve three times in the second set.
Stanford regained the lead on a 6-2, 6-3 win by No. 120 McVeigh as she defeated Goransson at court five to go up, 3-2. Just as she had in the first Cal-Stanford dual, Li clinched the victory for the Cardinal when she took out Davis at court six, 6-4, 6-4. With the outcome decided, Stanford added one more point to the scoreboard with a win by No. 39 Mallory Burdette. Burdette snapped No. 31 Andersson's 12-match singles winning streak by coming back from a 6-4 loss in the first set to win, 6-4, 6-3, in the second and third.
The Cal women will be back in action next weekend (April 22-24) at the Pac-10 singles and doubles championships in Ojai, Calif. Please visit CalBears.com or Pac-10.org for more information.
