Wildcats Defeat Cardinal, 10-2, In Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. - The eighth-ranked Stanford softball team fell at No. 4 Arizona, 10-2, in six innings to drop the series to the Wildcats, Saturday, at Hillenbrand Stadium in Tucson, Ariz. With the loss, the Cardinal fall to 4-4 in the Pac-10 and 30-8 overall, while the Wildcats move to 4-4 in the conference and 34-7 on the season.
Junior Ashley Chinn earned the start for the Cardinal and took the loss, dropping to 6-2 on the season. She totaled 3.1 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits while striking out three batters. Freshman Caitlin Breen made her second appearance of the season and tallied her first career strike out against Arizona power hitter Stacie Chambers. Breen finished with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched. Arizona pitcher Kenzie Fowler picked up the win, improving to 23-5 on the season.
Arizona took a 2-0 lead in the second inning as center fielder Lauren Schutzler ripped an RBI double to left field with the bases loaded. The `Cats added another run in the third as Chambers hit a solo home run over the center field wall. Arizona continued its scoring in the fourth as short stop K'Lee Arredondo hit a three-run shot to center field.
The Cardinal finally tallied its first hit of the game in the top of the fifth inning as sophomore Jenna Becerra hit a single to center field to deny Fowler the no-hitter. Then, in the top of the sixth, Hansen blasted a two-run shot to right center field to cut the Arizona lead to 6-2.
The Wildcats increased their lead in the sixth as left fielder Brittany Lastrapes led off with a solo home run. Then, after Schutzler got on base with an infield single, she advanced to second and third on wild pitches before scoring on a passed ball. Arredondo then walked and Chambers hit her second long ball of the day to end the game after six with a 10-2 Arizona win.
The teams will conclude the three-game series on Sunday at Hillenbrand Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
