April 18, 2010

TEMPE, Ariz. - Johnny Ruettiger went 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBI Sunday as the No. 3 Arizona State Sun Devils completed the Pac-10 Conference series sweep with the 14-6 win over the USC Trojans. The Trojans scored four runs in the first off ASU starter Jake Borup, but the Sun Devils responded with 11 unanswered runs.

Arizona State (31-3, 9-3) maintained first place in the Pac-10 Conference and kept its perfect record at home intact as the Sun Devils are now 22-0 this season. ASU had 13 hits in the game while taking advantage of five Trojan errors.

Borup ended up throwing seven innings for the Sun Devils, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Kole Calhoun was 2-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI with Deven Marrero and Austin Barnes adding two hits each.

Freshman outfielder Alex Glenn snapped a rough start to the season for the Trojans (15-20, 2-10) with a 2-for-2 day, hitting a double and recording his first collegiate homer with a solo shot in the ninth. Chad Smith (2-5) took the loss for USC after allowing five runs on five hits in 1 1/3 innings with two walks.

Trailing 4-1 in the second, ASU opened with consecutive singles from Ruettiger, Marrero and Andrew Aplin. Drew Maggi later singled to make it a 4-3 Trojan lead. Smith then tried a pickoff move to first, but threw wide of the base as Aplin scored the tying run. Maggi scored the go-ahead run when Smith was charged with a balk as the Sun Devils held the lead for the remainder of the game.
