April 19, 2010
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's soccer team returns to action early next week as the Beavers will host the U-23 United States Women's National Team on Wednesday, April 21, at 7:00 p.m. Admittance to the special exhibition match is free; however, fans are encouraged to 'Help Fight Hunger' by bringing a canned food item to donate to Community Outreach.
The exhibition match with the national squad marks the second consecutive season the national team has made an appearance at Paul Lorenz Field.
'Hosting the national team is a terrific opportunity and I know the team is extremely excited to have the chance to play against some of the best players in the world,' head coach Linus Rhode said. 'It's a great honor to have them in Corvallis again after they trained here last year. It should be a tremendous learning experience and a great chance for fans to see some of the best young players in the world.'
The U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team is led by head coach Bill Irwin as the squad brings 24 players in for its training camp in Corvallis this week. The U-23 national squad is the main source for future full national team players as the majority of the current player pool has been funneled through the U-20/U-23 program.
Training with the squad this week is Oregon State senior defender Courtney Wetzel, who has been called to the training camp after leading Oregon State to its first NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship since 1994.
A silent auction to benefit the women’s soccer program will be conducted throughout the match. Fans attending the match can place bids on a giant-sized, autographed team poster throughout the first half as winners will be announced at halftime of the US U-23 match with posters awarded at that time.
Oregon State returns seven starters from the most successful squad in the program’s history as the Beavers finished the season with a mark of 14-8-1 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2009 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship.
Following the match with the national team, Oregon State concludes the spring exhibition schedule with road games at Seattle Pacific (May 1) and against the Seattle Sounders (May 2).
