Cal Volleyball Faces Stanford in Head-to-Head Spring Scrimmage
April 20, 2010
BERKELEY - The California volleyball team will meet rival Stanford in a 7 p.m. PT scrimmage at the Maples Pavilion practice facility in Stanford, Calif. on Wednesday, April 21. The Golden Bears and the Cardinal will play four times sets. Fans can use the entrance from the Maples Pavilion parking lot on the south side of the practice facility or enter using the door adjacent to the loading dock on the northeast side of the building.
Cal's spring roster features two-time All-American setter Carli Lloyd. She is flanked by outside hitter Tarah Murrey. The two were USA A2 teammates in the summer of 2009 and helped guide the Bears to their third consecutive NCAA regional final appearance last fall. Defensive specialist Meagan Schmitt is the third of three upperclassmen on the roster. Rounding out the ten-member team are six sophomores and one early-enrollee. In the middle, the Bears will have Shannon Hawari, Kat Brown and Tia Gaffen. Attacking from the opposite position is Correy Johnson; with Elly Barrett at setter and Robin Rostratter at defensive specialist. The first early-enrollee in Cal history is incoming freshman outside hitter Lauren Loerch.
The Bears (21-11, 11-7 Pac-10) finished fourth in the conference and received the No. 8 ranking in the final 2009 AVCA poll. Cal earned its school-record eighth consecutive bid to the NCAA championship tournament. As the ninth-seeded team, Cal advanced to the Gainesville Regional final where it fell in three sets to three-time defending NCAA champion Penn State. The Bears moved into the NCAA regional final for the third time in three years; making them just one of four teams to accomplish the feat; joining Nebraska, Texas and Penn State. Cal's fourth straight appearance in the regional semifinal was also a new school record. Senior outside hitter Hana Cutura was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year and received her third selection to the AVCA All-America team where she was joined by Lloyd in her second appearance.
