Bears Sweep Lake Natoma Invitational
At last weekend's Lake Natoma Invitational in Gold River, Calif., Cal was the only team to sweep all finals it competed in, as the Bears won five finals in the second day of the Lake Natoma Invitational last Sunday. Cal was the top team overall in the two-day event. The Bears defeated No. 3 Stanford and No. 13 Washington State in three of the five finals. The varsity 8+ picked up its third victory of the weekend, topping the Cardinal by six seconds, 6:24.7-6:30.6. The second varsity 8+ also beat Stanford to the finish line, 6:35.5-6:40.9. The varsity 4+ defeated Washington State, 7:25.3-7:30.6, and the novice 8+ crossed the finish line six seconds before the Cougars, 6:48.9-6:54.9.
Last Year Against Washington
Cal's top-ranked varsity 8+ defeated Washington's seventh-ranked varsity 8+, 6:28.99-6:37.31, to win the Simpson Cup for the sixth straight year, and the Bears won two of four races over the Huskies overall on Montlake Cut. Cal's second varsity 8+ won its race, 6:45.40-6:47.50. Washington claimed wins in the varsity 4+, 7:30.78-7:33.13, and in the novice 8+, 6:55.71-7:09.46. The varsity 8+ was down two seats after the initial 25 strokes, but the Bears gradually moved away once they settled into their base speed.
A Look at the Cal-Washington Rivalry
Since 1975, Washington holds the all-time series lead for the Simpson Cup, 22-13, but Cal has won the last six consecutive times. The Bears also opened the series winning the first six years in a row from 1975-80. The only other time the Bears were victorious was in 1990.
