April 21, 2010
UCLA freshman Pontus Widegren has been named to Team Europe for the 2010 Palmer Cup Team, the Golf Coaches Assn. of America announced Wednesday.
The Palmer Cup will be played June 24-26 at Royal Portrush Club in Portrush, Northern Ireland. The competition is a Ryder Cup-style format consisting of collegiate players from the United States and Europe.
Widegren joins a 10-player European team that boasts three other Swedes plus an assistant coach.
'This is a prestigious honor for Pontus and it will be the first of many for him during his career at UCLA,' said UCLA Head Coach Derek Freeman. 'He will represent UCLA and the European team well.'
Widegren, 19, has made nine starts this season for the Bruins and has averaged 71.9 in 27 rounds. His best results were a pair of third place (tied) finishes at the Gifford Collegiate Championship and the Battle of the Beach. At the latter event, he posted his best score of the season, a 64 (-7) in the third round.
The all-time Palmer Cup series is tied 6-6-1.
