All Husky Doubles Teams Make Pac-10 Semis
April 23, 2010
OJAI, Calif. - This was exactly what head coach Jill Hultquist had in mind when she chose to have Washington's top players focus on their doubles at this weekend's Pac-10 Championships. All three UW doubles teams remain alive heading into Saturday's semifinal round, great news for a team which has searched for doubles consistency all season.
In the main doubles draw, Washington advanced two teams into the semis. The third-seeded tandem of Joyce Ardies and Denise Dy had a first round walkover after a USC duo withdrew, but then had to fight past UCLA's Noelle Hickey and Nina Pantic, 8-6, in the quarterfinal round.
They'll be joined in the semis by Venise Chan and Lina Xu, who had two valiant efforts against some desert rivals. In the first round, the Husky pair grabbed the last two games to beat Nadia Abdala and Michelle Brycki of Arizona State, 9-7. Later in the afternoon, they edged Arizona's Natasha Marks and Claire Rietsch, 8-6.
For either team to make the final, they'll have to upset one of the nation's top-ranked tandems. Ardies and Dy will face top-seeded Barte and Burdette of Stanford, who are ranked second in the NCAA. Chan and Xu will take on the No. 2-seeds, Schnack and Remynse of UCLA, who rank fifth nationally.
The success continued in the invitational doubles draw, where Aleksandra Malovic and Samantha Smith cruised to a pair of wins. First they roughed up Oregon's Cor and Skowronski, 8-1, then in the quarterfinals they posted an 8-5 win over USC's Pulido and Andrews. They will now face Cal's Radeva and Chang on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Today's wins should do wonders for UW's confidence moving ahead to the NCAA Championships. Washington is 10-0 on the year when it wins the doubles point, but just 1-6 when losing it. Late season struggles prompted a lineup shift, with Chan and Xu, and Smith and Malovic teaming up for the first time just two weeks ago in the final home weekend.
Washington dropped its last singles match of the weekend. Malovic and Smith both reached the invitational singles quarterfinals, but Smith pulled out of her match, and Malovic dropped a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 duel with UCLA's Carling Seguso.
