Andersson and Cossou Advance to Pac-10 Singles Semifinal
April 23, 2010
OJAI, Calif. - California women's tennis juniors Mari Andersson and Marina Cossou continued their strong play in the 2010 Pac-10 Tennis Championships at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club on Friday, April 23, as they each advanced to the singles semifinal. The Golden Bears also sent a pair of freshmen into the invitational tournament singles semifinal as Tayler Davis and Nelly Radeva prepare for third-round play.
As the sixth-seeded player in the singles draw, No. 34-ranked Andersson claimed her 30th singles victory of the year in a 6-1, 6-3 win over Arizona State's Hannah James. Third-seeded and No. 17-ranked Cossou earned a 6-1, 7-6 win over Washington State's Elisabeth Fournier by taking the second-set tiebreaker, 7-4.
Andersson draws second-seeded, No. 6-ranked Yasmin Schnack of UCLA and Cossou will face top-seeded, No. 4-ranked Hilary Barte of Stanford. Both Bears will be seeking revenge as Barte owns a 2-0 record in head-to-head matches with Cossou with both victories earned in 2008. Schnack defeated Andersson in their only meeting on Oct. 3, 2009. Both semifinal matches take place at 11 a.m. PT on Saturday, April 24, at the Libbey Park courts. The championship match is set to be played on Sunday, April 25, at 9:30 a.m. PT.
In the singles invitational quarterfinal, third-seeded Davis came back from dropping her first set, 7-5, to Sianna Simmons of Arizona State to force a third set by winning, 6-4, in the second. The two went the distance in the third before Davis pulled out a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker for her 25th singles win of the year to move ahead into the semifinal round. Fellow frosh Nelly Radeva didn't play her quarterfinal match as Washington's Samantha Smith withdrew from competition due to injury. Davis will face Carling Seguso while Radeva takes on Nina Pantic--both UCLA opponents--in semifinal matches at 9:30 a.m. PT on Saturday, April 24. The singles invitational title match takes place at 8 a.m. PT on Sunday, April 25.
The doubles championship opened up today with round of 16 matches. Cal's No. 62-ranked team of Cossou and senior Kasia Siwosz advanced to the quarterfinal by defeating Oregon's Trudie du Toit and Pavlina Smatova, but were eliminated, 8-4, by Stanford's top-seeded and No. 2-ranked duo of Barte and Lindsay Burdette.
In the invitational doubles tournament, Davis and Goransson received the second seed and defeated Natalie Dillon and Jennifer Yen of Stanford, 8-2, in the first round before bowing out in a tough 9-7 loss to UCLA's Stephanie Hoffpauir and Seguso. Chang and Radeva won both of their matches by an 8-4 count to move into the invitational doubles semifinal. First, the pair took out Jansen and Marina Nicolas of Washington State. Then, they defeated Arizona's team of Debora Castany and Jane Huh.
Chang and Radeva will take on Smith and Aleksandra Malovic of Washington in a 2 p.m. PT match on Saturday, April 24, at Libbey Park. The doubles invitational title match is set for 11 a.m. PT on Sunday.
