Dawgs Squander Early Lead In 10-2 Loss At No. 1 ASU

TEMPE, Ariz. - Despite taking an early lead, the Washington baseball team dropped the opening game of a three-game series at No. 1 Arizona State, 10-2, Friday night at Packard Stadium.
The Huskies fell to 19-17 on the season and 4-6 in the Pac-10 while the Sun Devils improved to 32-4 and 10-3.
ASU starting pitcher Seth Blair (7-0) remained unbeaten with the victory, working eight innings, allowing two runs on eight hits.
Husky reliever Forrest Snow (3-1), who came on with the score tied at 2-2 in the fourth, suffered the loss. He gave up four runs over two and one-third innings.
Senior second baseman Doug Cherry led the way for the Washington offense, going 2-for-4 with a double. ASU leadoff man Drew Maggi went 4-for-4 with a walk and an RBI while No. 2 batter Deven Marrero was 3-for-3 with a double, a homer, two RBI and a pair of walks.
Washington took the lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. With one down, Chase Anselment walked and Aaron Russell was hit by a pitch. Phoenix native Miles Kizer, the Husky catcher, followed with a single to drive in one. After a hit from David Bentrott loaded the bases, Bradley Boyer's sacrifice fly brought home a second run to give the UW a 2-0 lead.
In the third, ASU got two aboard via infield hits, the latter of them a bunt. Marrero followed with a bunt to third for a single and the throw to first was wild, allowing Maggi to score, cutting the Husky lead to 2-1.
ASU first baseman Riccio Torrez tied the score at 2-2 in the fourth when he led off the inning with his fifth homer of the season.
The Devils took their first lead of the night thanks to a two-out rally in the fifth. After a Maggi single, Marrero hit a two-run homer to make it a 4-2 ASU lead. Zach Wilson led off the sixth with a double and scored on a Matt Newman single and Newman scored on a Maggi single make it 6-2.
The Devils put the game away with a four-run outburst in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run homer from Zach Wilson.
The Huskies and Sun Devils play again Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Both games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
