April 24, 2010
OJAI, Calif. - The California women's tennis team finished its run in the 2010 Pac-10 Tennis Championships at the Libbey Park courts on Saturday, April 24. The Golden Bears fell just short of championship matches in the singles main draw and the invitational singles tournament as well as the invitational doubles tournament.
In one singles semifinal match pitting third-seeded junior Marina Cossou and top-seeded Hilary Barte of Stanford, No. 4-ranked Barte defeated No. 17 Cossou, 6-2, 6-4. In the other semifinal, sixth-seeded junior Mari Andersson fell to second-seeded Yasmin Schnack of UCLA, 7-5, 6-2.
In the singles invitational tournament, Cal freshmen Tayler Davis and Nelly Radeva faced players from UCLA in semifinal matches but were each turned away. Third-seeded Davis surrendered two 6-4 sets to Carling Seguso while Radeva won her first set, 6-4, before falling, 6-4, 6-4, in the second and third.
Radeva and sophomore Stephany Chang represented the Bears in the doubles invitational tournament and had earned two wins the day before but Washington's tandem of Aleksandra Malovic and Samantha Smith prevailed in an 8-6 victory to earn a spot in Sunday's final.
The 12th-ranked Bears will now turn their attention back to team play as they await selection into the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship. ESPNews will broadcast a live selection show on Tuesday, May 4, at 2 p.m. PT. Please check local listings for availability.
