April 25, 2010
STANFORD, CALIF. -
Stanford's Kenny Diekroeger knocked in the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the ninth inning off Cal reliever Matt Flemer to give the Cardinal an 11-10 victory over the Golden Bears in the final game of the three-game Pac-10 series. Diekroeder's hit was a disappointing end to an impressive Cal comeback as the Bears (23-14, 8-7) were down 5-0 after the first inning, but battled back and owned a 10-8 lead going into the bottom of the ninth. Marcus Semien went 4-for-4 with two doubles for the Bears.
Stanford (21-13, 10-5) ended up winning all three games of the series; 3-2, 15-12 and 11-10. Cal had won 11 of its last 12 games entering the series.
Cal had captured the lead for the first time in the eighth inning with the score tied, 8-8, when Semien hit his second double of the day down the left field line. He then advanced to third base on Brian Guinn's single to left field and scored on Mark Canha's squeeze bunt. The Bears got their second run of the inning when Guinn showed an amazing display of speed by scoring from second base on Tony Renda's sacrifice fly to center field.
But Cal's effort was not rewarded as Stanford mounted its comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning. Flemer (2-2, 3.1 innings, five hits, three runs, one walk, one strikeout), who has been outstanding for the Bears this season (three saves) gave up back-to-back doubles to yield one run. He then got a pop-up to first base before giving up an RBI single to Jake Schlander and the winning hit to left center field to Diekroeger.
After Cal starter Dixon Anderson struggled in the first inning (0.2 inning, three hits, five runs, one walk), the Bears slowly chipped away at the Cardinal lead. Cal scored twice in the third inning on an RBI triple by Guinn and an RBI ground out by Canha. The Bears added three more runs in the fourth inning on a lead-off home run by sophomore catcher Chadd Krist and a two-run double by Semien.Cal scored two more times in the sixth inning on sophomore left fielder Danny Oh's two-run double and finally tied the contest, 8-8, in the seventh inning on Krist's RBI double.
Besides Semien's 4-for-4 day; Guinn, Renda and Krist had two hits apiece. Semien finished the Stanford series 6-for-9 with four doubles and a pair of RBI.
Cal next travels to UC Davis for a non-conference game, Tuesday, April 27 at 2:30 p.m. at Dobbins Stadium in Davis.
Cal: Krist, solo home run in the sixth inning.
