UCLA Women's Tennis Sweeps Pac-10 Championships
April 25, 2010
Ojai, Calif. - The UCLA women's tennis team enjoyed unprecedented success at the Pac-10 Championships on Sunday, as the Bruins swept all four events at the 110th Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament held annually at Libbey Park in downtown Ojai.
Senior Yasmin Schnack made her final Pac-10 Championships one to remember, becoming the first UCLA player in history to sweep the singles and doubles titles in Ojai in the same season. In the singles final, Schnack, the No. 2 seed, downed Stanford's top-seeded Hilary Barte, 6-4, 7-5 to notch the first victory over her conference rival in four meetings this season. Schnack wasn't finished, as she and partner Andrea Remynse, seeded second in the doubles draw, cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over top-seeded Barte and Lindsay Burdette. For Schnack, it marks her second career doubles championship, as she won the title as a freshman with Riza Zalameda in 2007.
Unlike the two main draw events, the Bruins headed into Sunday knowing they would get a championship in the Invitational singles draw, with sophomores Nina Pantic and Carling Seguso vying for that title. Pantic was the better player on this day, taking a 6-2, 6-0 win over her teammate.
Seguso didn't leave Ojai without a championship, however, as she and freshman Stephanie Hoffpauir claimed the Invitational doubles crown with an 8-6 victory over Washington's Aleksandra Malovic and Samantha Smith.
Unfortunately, UCLA fell just short in its bid for two men's titles on Sunday. In the main draw doubles final, Amit Inbar and Nick Meister fell to top-seeded Robert Farah and Steve Johnson of USC, 6-3, 7-6(4). Alex Brigham was beaten in the Invitational singles final by USC's JT Sundling, 7-5, 7-6(4).
