April 27, 2010
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Senior Megan Langenfeld received her second Player of the Week honor in as many days on Tuesday, as she was named USA Softball National Player of the Week by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA). Langenfeld, who was named Pac-10 POW on Monday, becomes the first Bruin to earn three USA Softball NPOW awards.
Tuesday's accolade is the 12th all-time for UCLA. Langenfeld also earned the honor on May 15, 2007 and April 14, 2009. Andrea Duran, Keira Goerl and Anjelica Selden all received the award twice in their careers.
Langenfeld hit .714 (5-for-7) with four home runs, eight runs batted in, six runs scored and three walks at the plate and pitched eight innings of scoreless relief in the circle to help the Bruins to a three-game sweep of Stanford this weekend. She reached in nine of her 12 plate appearances, posting a 2.571 slugging percentage and a .750 on base percentage. In the circle, she earned a save on Saturday and a win on Sunday.
On Friday, the senior tied a career high with two home runs and four runs batted in, also scoring three runs, drawing a walk and hitting a sacrifice fly. Langenfeld produced a positive outcome in all four at-bats. After walking and scoring in her first at-bat in the first inning, Langenfeld hit a leadoff solo homer in the third to put the Bruins up 3-0. She drove in the Bruins' sixth run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth and hit a two-run homer in the fifth to give UCLA a 10-0 advantage.
On Saturday, Langenfeld threw three hitless innings of relief for her second save of the season. The school leader in saves retired nine of the 10 batters she faced, including the last seven, and struck out one. At the plate, the senior walked twice in her second and third at-bats, scoring once, before posting a double in the seventh inning to finish the game 1-for-2.
The senior reached in three of her four plate appearances on Sunday, rounding the bases on two of them. With the Bruins up 3-0 in the second, Langenfeld hit a three-run homer to right-center to extend the lead to 6-0. After she was hit by a pitch in the third, the senior belted her second homer of the game and fourth of the weekend to left to put the Bruins up 7-0. For the second time in three days, Langenfeld tied a career high with two homers and four RBI.
She got into the game as a pitcher in the second and blanked the Cardinal for five innings. Langenfeld struck out two and allowed five hits and a walk. The senior retired the side in order in the third and set down eight of nine at one point.
