Cal Signs Emerson Murray
April 29, 2010
BERKELEY - Emerson Murray, a 6-3, combo guard from St. George's School in Vancouver, British Columbia, has signed a National Letter of Intent with California, Golden Bear head coach Mike Montgomery announced Thursday. Murray has been regarded by Hoopstars Canada as the second-best backcourt prospect in Canada.
'We're really excited about Emerson,' Montgomery said. 'First and foremost, he's a tremendous person. He's very positive, friendly and polite. He's the kind of guy that you love to be around. I think he'll be a tremendous addition to the California family and community. More importantly for us, as a basketball player, he's very athletic. He's very quick laterally and very explosive. We think he's a late find that's going to really pay huge dividends.'
As a junior at St. George's School, he averaged 24 points per game, eight rebounds per game, five assists per game and three steals per game. In the B.C. provincial championship game, he nailed a 15-foot jumper with 2.6 seconds left to help St. George's capture its first-ever provincial basketball title in a 63-62 victory over perennial power and main rival Vancouver College Prep. He then went on to win the slam dunk contest as one of only three juniors at the All-Canada Game.
After breaking his ankle last summer while playing in Las Vegas, Murray rejoined his high school team for his senior season in January.
Murray was also named tournament MVP of the Western Canada Basketball Tournament this past February, racking up 10 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, four steals and a block in the finale that his team won, 67-53.
