McMorrow Named Pac-10 Freshman Of The Year
April 29, 2010
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington's Kyle McMorrow has been voted the Pac-10 Conference Men's Tennis Freshman of the Year, the conference office announced today. McMorrow becomes the third Husky ever to earn the prestigious honor. Conference awards are based on a vote of the Pac-10 men's tennis head coaches.
The awards were announced in conjunction with the All-Pac-10 Team, which features Husky junior Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan on the six-man Second Team. McMorrow also garnered All-Pac-10 honorable mention.
McMorrow, a Thousand Oaks, Calif. native, has played No. 2 singles for the Huskies throughout his rookie season, compiling a 17-5 dual record that leads the team in both wins and win percentage. He knocked off four ranked singles players during the year and had a team-best eight match win streak during dual play from Feb. 12 through March 23. McMorrow and Nedunchezhiyan teamed up in doubles, playing primarily in the No. 1 spot, and they advanced to the Pac-10 semifinals last week and have been ranked as high as No. 50.
McMorrow joins Alex Vlaski (2002) and Alex Slovic (2004) as recipients of the Freshman of the Year honor. Both Vlaski and Slovic went on to earn All-America honors and each made the NCAA singles semifinals under head coach Matt Anger.
Nedunchezhiyan earns his third conference honor following honorable mention as a freshman and First Team honors as a sophomore. The Chennai, India native has played No. 1 singles throughout the year for UW, leading the men to a 17-5 record and a likely berth in the NCAA Championships. Nedunchezhiyan is 14-7 at No. 1 singles and 21-11 for the year while playing No. 1 doubles with McMorrow. He earned six wins over ranked opponents and was ranked 32nd in the fall and as high as 51st during the dual season.
The Huskies will learn their NCAA destination for the first two rounds on May 4, with NCAA Regional play taking place May 14-16.
